Production notes
Winemaking
Fermented in 2 ton fermentation vessels and 500L new French Oak Puncheons. The 500L puncheon fermentations were 100% whole cluster with the 2 ton fermenters having 100% destemmed and sorted fruit with a lot of whole berries. Fermentations were treaded twice a day until the fermentation started to take off. At that point the fermentation was punched down 3-4 times a day based off of tasting the lot and fermentation activity. Fermentations were allowed to run hot. Peak temperatures were in the low to mid 90s. Average total maceration time was 25 days. Lots were pressed off at dryness.
Elevage
The wines were aged for 20 months in 100% brand new French Oak puncheons. The lots were aged on the lees for 14 months then racked blended and returned to barrel to age the remaining 6 months.
Vintage
Hot, fast and furious, the 2022 vintage came in guns blazing. It is the earliest vintage in memory, and it made for a different profile of wine. Expect 2022 wines to be bigger, more robust versions of the wines you know from producers. It in many ways harkens back to the early 2000s wines from the area. Given the ripeness and relative short hangtime of the vintage we went all in on new oak to help evolve the tannin profile of the wine and to match the riper profile of the season.
